Has it been six years already? I first saw Nothing But Thieves as a support band for Muse in Cologne. And knowing that Dom Howard always chooses his support acts with meticulous care for musicianship, it wasn’t hard to love these Essex boys.
Finally, after two years of Coronski, back at one of my favourite venues and with two support acts of their own - Kid Kapichi and Black Honey - they kick off the set with “Futureproof” and continue with “Real Love Song”, only making the girl next to me cry of joy, not sadness.
No song like “Life’s Coming in Slow” hits home after these few years - whether the crowd understand the lyrics or if the music conveys that message, I don’t know. Explosive truths right there!
The audience sing “Sorry” back to Conor with the loyalty they’ve kept for these unbelievably gifted musicians over the year and the Schlachthof explodes when the set ends with “Amsterdam”.
As much as they kept us waiting to start the show, they do grace us with two songs in the encore and I cannot thank Conor, Joe, Dominic, Philip and James for leading us back into some kind of new normality with this gig!
Dankeschön.
