RISE AGAINST

The lads from Chicago are headed to Europe this winter.

Am I surprised that they sold out some of the European shows already? Hell, no!

Is their message more important than ever? Absolutely, yes.

Their most recent album, Nowhere Generation (Loma Vista Recordings), shone a spotlight on the social and economical deck that has been stacked against the younger generations’ pursuit of The American Dream. It hit several charts, including multiple Billboard charts (including #1 on Rock). I hear they’re working on new material and I just cannot wait to see them again in 2025!

Stay vocal!

Alexa Viscius shot this epic photo.

Social Media, Media and Procrastination

We’re sorry for the silence but with writing for various outlets, one of our contributors taking a hiatus and procrastination, updating on here has been on the back burner.

We had a few incredible outings, the most prominent one was definitely the Nick Cave gig in Berlin. He’s a God. I saw him for the first time in 1986 and he has evolved into this master of music. Incredible.

Of course, if you follow our Instagram @rockculture_nic you will have seen the photos but I’ll upload them in the gigs section nonetheless.

Lots more gigs we are looking forward to next year, too - Alanis Morissette, Rise Against, Fontaines DC, and many more.

Look out on our dreaded social media and on here for the occasional update. Over and out.

Gig News - but not reviews

We haven’t been very vocal about any of the festivals this year. The last few years accreditation has been granted for a lot of influencers, which we are not.

Rockculture® is about the love of music. Quite simple.

Saying that, we were so looking forward to bringing you coverage of the Pearl Jam shows in Germany but they’ve been cancelled due to health issues. Wishing Eddie and the lads good health and hoping the fans had insurance cos things get costly when an artist cancels. But health comes first.

It does mean that we get to go to the Garbage show in Wiesbaden. Five years it has taken for them to come back to the ever eager fans.

Their re-release of “Bleed Like Me” has been flying off the shelves, okay, has been downloaded tons, but both versions had perks, like silver vinyl, red vinyl, extra tracks and alternative tracks. Quite genius!

I cannot wait to see Shirley, Duke, Steve and Butch! Break a leg!

Festival Season is Upon Us

Not long to go, peeps.

Which are your favourite festivals? What makes them special? Do you go for the music and the acts? Or do you go to be with your mates? To get sloshed and end up in a ditch? Or is it all of those things?

I want to know - please send me your thoughts either via Instagram or email - nicole@rockculture.net

If you’re a person who travels, which countries do you think pull off the best festivals and why?

Rockculture are particularly fond of Rock im Park and Rock Werchter. Both always have incredible line-ups and the hospitality is good. This year we’re also looking to attend some British festivals, like Lytham Festival, so watch this space.

The line ups for these festivals are insane - Babymetal, Dogstar, Green Day, Corey Taylor, Machine Head, While She Sleeps, Queens of the Stone Age - dude! that’s only Nuremberg! Werchter have Foo Fighters headlining and Lytham Festival have Madness, Rick Astley, James and Johnny Marr.

Here’s some photos from some of our faves from last year’s Rock im Park which was epic, to say the least.

HOT! HOT MILK

HOT MILK have today released their debut album "A CALL TO THE VOID" and a new single "OVER YOUR DEAD BODY".

"A call to the void represents the dichotomy of life, the comedy and the tragedy of being a human alive on this floating rock. Two minds became one through this record.  We opened our chest 'n it’s time for you to devour it. Hot Milk is an emotion." says the band

LISTEN TO "OVER YOUR DEAD BODY" HERE - it is a perfect combination of honest lyrics underlined by a bass line that will blow your socks off. We cannot wait to hear this song live!

HOT MILK have been one of the hardest working bands we have ever had the pleasure of following. They have left nothing to chance and with their determination and discipline have landed not only well deserved fans, but supporters in the industry both behind the scenes but also on stage, where they have supported no other than Foo Fighters to touring with bands like Pale Waves and their own headline sold-out shows to over 50 million streams of the EPs alone.

The band recorded the album between Manchester, Los Angeles and Stockholm and Jim Shaw produced the majority of the record himself, again, a token to their drive and direction.

In French, the phrase, “J’appel du vide”, means the brain’s trick of spotting opportunities to die, that bridge which looks big enough, that building that looks high enough to jump off, but I see “A CALL TO THE VOID”, the English translation, not as a negative jolt, but a reminder that life is, indeed, finite.

Han has been very open about her emotions and her connection to music as a vent.

“Live is where I’m happiest, live is where it’s home,” says Han. “We wrote songs with the intention of people going off, making you feel good, opening the pit up, letting go, crying, getting on your mate’s shoulders.  It’s Church for us.”

Listen to HOT MILK’s music and you will be able to relate - go and see them live to immerse yourself into their gospel.

The Story So Far

I cannot tell you how excited I am about the return of The Story So Far. The prominent band in the alternative music scene have released their new single, "Big Blind" (produced and Engineered by Ben Hirschfield).  It’s their first release since their critically acclaimed album "Proper Dose" in 2018. If you want an incredible mix of really powerful vocals with some rather catchy melodies, you will love "Big Blind”.

People in Deutschland are lucky as not only are The Story So Far supporting Blink 182 on their forthcoming European tour, but they also have some headlining sets lined up, too.

Festival Season is Upon Us

What better way to kick off the festival season than to fly to Boston?

Boston Calling has been an institution for decades, starting off as a tiny venue and evolving into a huge spectacle with four stages.

Local acts have always had their place and new artists will always get a chance to perform. With Boston being the home of Berklee College of Music, the competition will always be tough but it’s a delight to see the variety of talent each year.

We’ve come to explore but also to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It’s been too long.

We may be extremely excited to see the Foo Fighters, too. Their new drummer Josh Freese will absolve his probatory time during the next few gigs. With his resume of drumming for A Perfect Circle, The Vandals and Devo, I think he’ll be alright.

Saturday brings us many more acts, though we have come for Alanis Morissette. She is a queen. Full stop.

And Sunday we end with Queens of the Stone Age and Paramore, though we are also intrigued to see King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - it will take magic for us to fly from stage to stage.

Following Boston we are intending to attend Rock im Park. The line up looks promising. For now, Boston is Calling.

Boston Calling 2023

Where Have I Been?

Have you ever had this weird sensation where you think, “Where have I been?”, when all of a sudden loads of stuff is happening that you want to be involved in but you lost track of time? So many gigs we at Rockculture want to go to. The reason we’ve been absent a lot is, of course, Nicole writing a book. A book about music of the 1980’s and lots of other stuff. More on that another time. But it basically meant being in hibernation for months (maybe even years).

What’s cooking in Frankfurt?

Limp Bizkit are playing tonight at the Jahrhunderthalle. We won’t be there.

Saturday, 08. April Heaven 17 are playing at DAS BETT. Long awaited, since 2020, thanks virus.

What we are also super excited about Boston Manor next week, again at DAS BETT on 13. April. We haven’t seen these lads from Blackpool in years. With their new album DATURA they have once again proven Kerrang right - they are “The Voice of a New Generation”.

Post Covid is Pre Covid? Old Bands vs. New Bands....

Yes, we’ve been to a few gigs since Covid. We’ve written about a few. But the feeling has been somewhat ambivalent - to wear a mask, to venture into crowds? But hey, if you love music, the adrenaline (along with my four vaccines) may or may not protect me from the dreaded virus. But even if it doesn’t, I will have died happy seeing 5SOS (there, I said it), Franz Ferdinand, TOOL, Einstürzende Neubauten, GARY NUMAN and Charakter.

The latter two have been the best. One a very, very old artist, but a performer who has come out of his shell over the last four decades. Incredible stuff. If you ever get the chance to see GARY NUMAN live, do it.

The other is a new band. A band founded in Frankfurt by a Scouser cum Frankfurter with two of Frankfurt’s finest, Kiran Echt and Elias Hartard. Dylan Smith was recording and producing an album for Frankfurt band Past Reflection after he met them playing gigs with his former band. After PR split, he started writing songs with their drummer and guitarist. Whilst completing his final year at Leeds Conservatoire, he added Andy Danson to the mix and what you have is a unique voice with musical nuances of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Placebo and a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that will take the music world by storm.

I was lucky enough to witness their gig at the Lending Room in Leeds and I cannot wait to see more of them. If their album is as good as their show, they may just give all the Machine Gun Kellys a run for their money.

Real music - yes, with bells and whistles, but not instead of actual music.

ALT-J are BACK

alt-j by Rosie Matheson

It’s been a while since alt-j collected their Mercury Prize for their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’.

The first track of their new album ‘The Dream’ was released last summer. ‘U&ME’ had them skating in the video for said song and they obviously wanted to soak up the Cali feeling completely for ‘The Actor’ by residing in Chateau Marmont. Not sure if John Belushi’s spirit contributed, but their new tunes are more eery than normal but always with a sense of optimism.

Slipknot are BACK

Two years of silence but now, alongside their Knotfest shows, Slipknot release their new song “The Chapeltown Rag”.

Corey Taylor says, “it’s a punisher. It’s classic Slipknot. And it’s frenetic.

Lyrically it’s coming from a point of talking about the various manipulations that can happen when social media meets media itself. And the different ways that these manipulations can try to pull us in different directions, in the fact that we’re all becoming addicts to it, which is very, very dangerous.”

HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO WAGE WAR!

It’s 1st October today and guess what?! Florida hard rock quintet WAGE WAR — Briton Bond [lead vocals], Cody Quistad [rhythm guitar, clean vocals], Seth Blake [lead guitar], Chris Gaylord [bass], and Stephen Kluesener [drums] — release their fourth and brand-new album ‘Manic’  TODAY!

They spoke to us about the upcoming album, “after a long wait, and endless hours of work, we could not be more ecstatic to announce our new album Manic. We've spent the entire last year working so hard to bring you the best Wage War yet, and we've never been more sure that we've accomplished that.“

Their first single of the record ‘Circle the Drain’, “is a song about learning from past mistakes and accepting responsibility in a world that needs change. It starts with us deciding to be a part of the solution.” Listen the ‘Circle The Drain’  HERE.

The new album on a whole has been long awaited by fans and industry alike. The drummer, Steve Kluesner comments,
"’Manicencompasses everything we’ve gone through as musicians in the last year-and-a-half. The whole industry halted, and we technically lost our jobs. Our scene was among the first to leave and the last to come back. The album captures the whole period."
Cody Quistad adds saying, "’Mania’ is a wild emotion. The last year was all severe highs and lows. We had some victories, but we've also had so many low points. We've built this thing for the last 10 years and put all of our chips into it. We've missed birthdays and funerals, but we've done some extraordinary things. Last year, we found ourselves wondering if it would ever come back. That's really what the album is about."

Judge for yourselves- I believe Wage War’s new album is a continuation of 2019’s ‘Pressure’, which landed on Loudwire’s ’50 Best Metal Albums of 2019’. With this new collection they will reach new heights and we are looking to seeing them live again real soon.

‘Manic’ is out now on Fearless Records and can be ordered here.

Happy Release Day!

DEAD CAN DANCE confirm tour for Spring 2022

Dead Can Dance planned to tour Germany this past spring, but Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard had to postpone and we are thrilled to say that they will be playing live next year with their “Europe -2022” tour.

From their beginnings playing pubs in Melbourne in the early 1980s they have always added to their repertoire by incorporating rock music, neo-classical tunes, world music, even music from the Middle Ages. If you don’t believe me you must go and see for yourself- Perry and Gerrard will transport you into a magical world of sounds, cleverly using African percussion instruments, didgeridoos or Asian strings. Always clever and innovative they have the most interesting audience who go absolutely crazy when they play songs from ‘The Serpent’s Egg’ or ‘Into the Labyrinth’.

All original tickets are still valid, but I urge you to buy yours if you want to listen to some inspirational music which has been around for decades but always delivers something absolutely new and unique.

German tour dates:

26.04.2022 Frankfurt - Jahrhunderthalle //originally 22.03.2021

JUSTIN SULLIVAN GOES SOLO

Another concert postponed thanks to the times we live in. But better late than never, Justin Sullivan is at Batschkapp this coming Friday, 17th September, promoting his second solo album, ‘Surrounded’.

18 years after Justin’s first solo album, ‘Navigating by the Stars’, ‘Surrounded’ is a collection of 16 new songs written during lockdown. And in true Sullivan style, this songwriter tells stories of landscapes, the world and his perception. Justin has the ability to make intelligent parallels and observations about history and the current developments in the world.

“The stories of polar (and in particular Antarctic) adventurers at the beginning of the 20th Century have long been a fascination,” Sullivan explains regarding the new single ‘Amundsen’. On my first solo record, [the song] ‘Ocean Rising’ is, in part, the story of Ernest Shackleton’s epic voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia. The final race to reach the South Pole between Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen is another fascinating tale. Being raised in England, Scott and his ‘noble, tragic’ failure is a story written large in national mythology but the other man, a truly remarkable explorer, is rarely acknowledged. The battle over who gets to tell which version of a story is very relevant in these times of ‘culture wars,’ but the song is more a simple study of the man himself. I hope I have done him justice.

Under the circumstances, it wasn’t particularly surprising that this was the moment to make another solo record and the songs came thick and fast in the first few weeks of the lockdown,” Sullivan shares about the album. “There is not so much about ‘what’s happening in the world.’ As with ‘Navigating by the Stars’, which was written in the aftermath of 9/11, I wanted to write about other things — some well-known stories, some less well-known, a few autobiographical, and more a landscape of the imagination than social comment. I’m grateful for all the many musical contributions I received from friends that helped create all the different atmospheres and places; it’s a long album, but it seems that all the songs belonged together in one collection. I hope people enjoy it.”

Justin recorded most songs on the record at home and included fellow musicians Tom Moth (Florence and the Machine and brother of New Model Army bassist Ceri Monger) on harp, Jon Thorpe (Lamb) on bass amongst the other members of NMA. Sullivan’s composer friends Shir-Ran YinonHenning Nügel and Tobias Unterberg also feature on this album of genius storytelling. Surrounded was mixed by Lee Smith at Greenmount Studios in Leeds.

Justin’s first solo album ‘Navigating by the Stars’ has been unavailable to buy for years; when the CD was released in 2003, The Independent said it had “the warm organic quality of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks”. Not sure Justin will want to be compared to Van Morrison other than musically, but lucky for his fans, the album is being re-released with the current release of ‘Surrounded’. Whether you buy the bos set, the CDs or vinyls (!) individually or download digitally, drop in to Batschkapp to see the songs performed live.

To get you in the mood, watch the video to the single ‘Amundsen’ here https://youtu.be/n_YZd6N978c

See you on Friday!

New Track and New Heights from Crown The Empire

Just when I was getting very tired of creatives coming up with lockdown books and music, along come Crown The Empire. With their new track ‘In Another Life’ featuring the epic Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox on guest vocals they have combined their distinctive rhythm section, angular riffs, Hayden Tree’s screams and Andy Leo’s emotionally-charged clean vocals in one song that makes me want to believe that there will be more good music to come out of these strange, stupid times of sorrow and disease.

“‘In Another Life’ was the first song we wrote while working on our new album in the studio. The The idea initially started because I was talking with a friend of mine about how we both had just gotten out of serious relationships during the pandemic. These relationships that were once comforting and safe now felt confining.

Because of COVID, my life got completely derailed and I was getting very little sleep. My entire identity was so wrapped up in my ability to sing and tour the world that having that taken away from me made me feel like a ghost.

Over the course of the next year I started having crazy dreams and seeing strange things around my house. One night I saw feet running up and down the stairs but brushed it off, telling myself I was just imagining things. But then another night my producer came over and mentioned he saw a girl walking up and down the stairs.

After some research, I found out there had been an actress from the 1920's who lived in my house. She was a huge partier, slept very few hours, and was even close to the same age as me when she died. I really connected with her story and it inspired me to write this song.

We thought Courtney from Spiritbox would be the perfect fit for a guest feature and she crushed it. We’re so stoked to have her on ‘In Another Life’.” Andy Leo

RIP Joey

Joey Jordison, one of the founding members of Slipknot, died at the age of 46 this week.

His family said the legendary drummer died “peacefully in his sleep”. He was said to have had “a gentle soul and a big heart”. No foul play or drugs were linked to his death.

He rose from founding Slipknot in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa to winning a Grammy with the nine-piece in 2006 for their third studio album „Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)“. His proudest moment was winning „Best Drummer“ in the 2010 edition of ‚Rhythm‘.

Joey Jordison was shocked when the band decided to kick him out of Slipknot in 2013, apparently “without any explanation or comments from his band members or their management“. Rumour had it that his playing ability started lacking due to his recently diagnosed nerve disease Transverse Myelitis. In true Jordison fashion he fought hard to rehabilitate his skills with months of intensive physio therapy, going on to play with bands like Metallica and Rob Zombie, but also founding new projects like Murderdolls, Scar the Martyr, Vimic and Sinsaenum.

Jordison was a drumming legend and will be missed by his fans and colleagues alike. RIP my friend.

What Would Frankfurt be Without BATSCHKAPP?

Boring. It would be boring.

It’s been exactly a year since Live Music stopped. Promoters have suffered enormously, even thought they had pandemic-proof hygiene concepts in place. No place more than the Batschkapp who had seating arrangemnts and an outdoor venue to envy. Still, through no fault of their own, it went tits-up.

Until gigs are up and running again, it isn’t just the promoters who are suffering. It’s the musicians, the crew and us, the listeners.  Ralf Scheffler, legendary Batschkapp Boss, has had enought and has decided to grab his guitar and do a live stream, “if we can only book a limited amount of bands, we’ll play ourselves.”

His 60’s band The Terrible Noises will play their livestream on 12 March and Batschkapp are honoured to have been able to commit Shantel with their DISKO PARTIZANI DIGITAL WORLDWIDE CONCERT including their Bucovina Club Orkestar for the following day.

All proceeds of your tickets go directly to the musicians, crew and staff of the Batschkapp. Frankfurt needs the Batschkapp and they need you. Rock on!

A little side note on THE TERRIBLE NOISES…

this band was created as a “House Band” in honour of the anniversary of the legendary Batschkapp. I’m not going to lie- do I like The Kinks or Creedence Clearwater? No, but I will occasionally listen to The Doors and I’ve been known to love Nico and Lou Reed. So when Ralf Scheffler plays his guitar, the house tech Udo Fliegl slaps the bass, the local promoter and booker Matze Brunner sings and the legendary Seppl Niemeyer plays the drums, I’ll be there.

I’ve bought my ticket. Have you?
