JUSTIN SULLIVAN GOES SOLO

Another concert postponed thanks to the times we live in. But better late than never, Justin Sullivan is at Batschkapp this coming Friday, 17th September, promoting his second solo album, ‘Surrounded’.

18 years after Justin’s first solo album, ‘Navigating by the Stars’, ‘Surrounded’ is a collection of 16 new songs written during lockdown. And in true Sullivan style, this songwriter tells stories of landscapes, the world and his perception. Justin has the ability to make intelligent parallels and observations about history and the current developments in the world.

“The stories of polar (and in particular Antarctic) adventurers at the beginning of the 20th Century have long been a fascination,” Sullivan explains regarding the new single ‘Amundsen’. On my first solo record, [the song] ‘Ocean Rising’ is, in part, the story of Ernest Shackleton’s epic voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia. The final race to reach the South Pole between Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen is another fascinating tale. Being raised in England, Scott and his ‘noble, tragic’ failure is a story written large in national mythology but the other man, a truly remarkable explorer, is rarely acknowledged. The battle over who gets to tell which version of a story is very relevant in these times of ‘culture wars,’ but the song is more a simple study of the man himself. I hope I have done him justice.

Under the circumstances, it wasn’t particularly surprising that this was the moment to make another solo record and the songs came thick and fast in the first few weeks of the lockdown,” Sullivan shares about the album. “There is not so much about ‘what’s happening in the world.’ As with ‘Navigating by the Stars’, which was written in the aftermath of 9/11, I wanted to write about other things — some well-known stories, some less well-known, a few autobiographical, and more a landscape of the imagination than social comment. I’m grateful for all the many musical contributions I received from friends that helped create all the different atmospheres and places; it’s a long album, but it seems that all the songs belonged together in one collection. I hope people enjoy it.”

Justin recorded most songs on the record at home and included fellow musicians Tom Moth (Florence and the Machine and brother of New Model Army bassist Ceri Monger) on harp, Jon Thorpe (Lamb) on bass amongst the other members of NMA. Sullivan’s composer friends Shir-Ran YinonHenning Nügel and Tobias Unterberg also feature on this album of genius storytelling. Surrounded was mixed by Lee Smith at Greenmount Studios in Leeds.

Justin’s first solo album ‘Navigating by the Stars’ has been unavailable to buy for years; when the CD was released in 2003, The Independent said it had “the warm organic quality of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks”. Not sure Justin will want to be compared to Van Morrison other than musically, but lucky for his fans, the album is being re-released with the current release of ‘Surrounded’. Whether you buy the bos set, the CDs or vinyls (!) individually or download digitally, drop in to Batschkapp to see the songs performed live.

See you on Friday!

What Would Frankfurt be Without BATSCHKAPP?

Boring. It would be boring.

It’s been exactly a year since Live Music stopped. Promoters have suffered enormously, even thought they had pandemic-proof hygiene concepts in place. No place more than the Batschkapp who had seating arrangemnts and an outdoor venue to envy. Still, through no fault of their own, it went tits-up.

Until gigs are up and running again, it isn’t just the promoters who are suffering. It’s the musicians, the crew and us, the listeners.  Ralf Scheffler, legendary Batschkapp Boss, has had enought and has decided to grab his guitar and do a live stream, “if we can only book a limited amount of bands, we’ll play ourselves.”

His 60’s band The Terrible Noises will play their livestream on 12 March and Batschkapp are honoured to have been able to commit Shantel with their DISKO PARTIZANI DIGITAL WORLDWIDE CONCERT including their Bucovina Club Orkestar for the following day.

All proceeds of your tickets go directly to the musicians, crew and staff of the Batschkapp. Frankfurt needs the Batschkapp and they need you. Rock on!

A little side note on THE TERRIBLE NOISES…

this band was created as a “House Band” in honour of the anniversary of the legendary Batschkapp. I’m not going to lie- do I like The Kinks or Creedence Clearwater? No, but I will occasionally listen to The Doors and I’ve been known to love Nico and Lou Reed. So when Ralf Scheffler plays his guitar, the house tech Udo Fliegl slaps the bass, the local promoter and booker Matze Brunner sings and the legendary Seppl Niemeyer plays the drums, I’ll be there.

I’ve bought my ticket. Have you?

So many gigs and so little time

Hoping that Rock Werchter will be better organised than Rock im Park was, we feel the need to head to smaller venues- to enjoy the actual gig and in order to keep sane. The big crowds make it so hard to enjoy the music, which is why we enjoyed Cane Hill in Trier that much. Why they only supported is beyond us, but so are a lot of things.

Before heading to Belgium we are making our way to the Batschkapp to see Stone Temple Pilots on 26 June. Be there, unless of course you go and see them the night before in Cologne at the Live Music Hall. Their European tour continues, so if you can, you should check them out.

Werchter next for Rockculture and friends and we will actually be leaving Werchter early, mainly because Lamb of God are back in Frankfurt. They play Batschkapp on 01 July. Check out their other dates on lamb-of-god.com though

Some may call them conceited, some may call them genius, we just call them Royal Blood. First time heard about them was through MUSE and supporting Foo Fighters at Fenway Park. They started out as a unique kind of band, their attitude may or may not have helped them along the way. There comes a time in every band’s life though, when you have to be humble. I will observe their attitude and their live set on 23 July in Wiesbaden at the Schlachthof or on 24 July in Hamburg at the Grosse Freiheit 36….

A band who have always had fun with what they do are The Damend. We are super excited to see some headline shows from them again. They play

Schlachthof, Bremen on 30.07.2019 and

Stollwerck, Köln on 01.08.2019

That is us done for July. Catch more from us next week. Over and out.

THE DAMNED

When you say “Punk” you associate the term with lots of different bands, but pathfinders for this movement were and are The Damned.

They released their first album “Damned Damned Damned” and their first single “New Rose” back in 1976 and toured the same circuit as Siouxie and the Banshees, The Stranglers, Iggy and the Stooges and The Liverpool Explosion. Music was raw but it was that movement that made it real, no Simon Cowell in sight.

The Damned also knew how to diversify before musicians had to – Captain Sensible and his chart loving release of “Wot” was epic and my little Goth heart skipped a beat when they released “Eloise” (even mentioning that song, I will hum that melody all day). I also remember reading that Vanian and his wife had coffins for beds and I am dying to find out (pun intended) if Smash Hits made that one up….

Their new album "Evil Spirits" is testament to diversion, but it is fun and brilliant!

If you need proof watch their latest release “Look Left” from their new album here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za7S1q4qU2Q

I am not sure that Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible ever stopped touring in the 40+ years, but the two of them along with their bassist John Priestley, keyboarder Monty Oxymoron and drummer Pinch Pinching are touring Germany in May. You would be a complete idiot to miss these legends.

DANKESCHÖN ARCHITECTS!

We all have our personal stories of loss and pain.

The Architects gig at Batschkapp last night was not just a tribute to Tom Searle and his incredible songwriting. It was a tribute to the band, to everyone who has ever gone through hard times - our own hardships always feel like the worst- and without wanting to sound all mushy, it helped to find a little peace. At the end of the day, we are all in the same boat and I am so grateful that lyrics and music will always be a place to express and console equally.

Thank you xxxxx

October continued.....

Well with Austin being ill again and Of Mice & Men cancelling their tour, it made the rest of the month's events even more exciting.

27 October. Batschkapp, Frankfurt. Not only are Batschkapp celebrating their 40th anniversary, but Architects are venturing on this tour, which will be the most humbling gig. "All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us" speaks more volumes than it ever did and we, for one, cannot wait to see this epic show. One of our "followers" said how grateful he was that Architects are playing these shows- I could not agree more.

With Stick to Your Guns and Bury Tomorrow (remember how we raged about their album "Earthbound" back in January?!) supporting Architects, this will be THE gig of the month.

It will be really nice to go and relax to Ricky Wilson and his Kaiser Chiefs come 29 October in Wiesbaden. They always put on a FUN show, but it is hardly going to compare to the gig mentioned before.

Hope to see you at one of these gigs- yeah?

Watch this space for November's goodies.....Twin Atlantic, THE CURE, Biffy Clyro, Bullet for My Valentine, YOUNG GUNS, WHILE SHE SLEEPS, Bring Me the Horizon!!!!!
