WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

Has anyone else felt overwhelmed in the past YEAR?

As if the pandemic wasn’t enough to deal with, the loss of live music as we know it, has been detrimental to not only the musicians themselves but to us consumers, too. Mental health has become more of an issue than ever before as I feel that we have been left to our own devices.

One thing that helps when we are down is MUSIC and performers have taken the chance to find new ways to share with us. I, for one, was excited to see THRICE back with a very cool project.

Thrice by Dan Monick

They’ve been around since 1998 and their music has been consistently strong. Innovative rock created by their frontman Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge from their debut album Identity Crisis in 2000 to their last album three years ago, Palms.

To remind us that music isn’t dead and a sure way of keeping sane amongst these weird times, Thrice did an exclusive acoustic session for SirusXM’s hard rock channel Octane live from home. They’ve just launched “Just Breathe” and “Better Bridge” from the session on all streaming platforms.

"It's always fun to try dig out the skeletons buried in the songs,” front man Dustin Kensrue says in regards to stripping down the tracks. “We nearly always start songs with instrumental parts and craft melodic structure around those parts, and so it's a process of discovery when we do a stripped-down project like this and cut things away to find the core of the song."

The session is also available on 7” via the band’s webstore

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL.......

We had good intentions when we said we would let you know about re-scheduled concerts. We did. But as soon as we were ready to list the new dates, the promoters would bombard us with new emails, delaying everything again. And then again. So, for now, you will have to wait to see the bands you had booked tickets for, probably until next year. Unless you find a venue who is allowed to stage acts outside. We have found such a magical place.

Ironically, the person who initiated the first cool concert hall in Frankfurt way back when (you know it’s true), is one of the people who has been harshly hit with trying to save his legacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. BUT here’s the good news: Ralf Scheffler and his loyal crew have been able establish not just the coolest place to drink your beer on the weekends, but also listen to live music and even watch some comedy acts; The Sommergarten in the epic Batschkapp.

BEERIOS ANYONE?

BEERIOS ANYONE?

Why Cry When You Can Laugh?

These are weird times, in a surreal world. Someone ate an undercooked bat and now we cannot see our friends, cannot visit our mums and dads in their homes, or in a home, have to wash our hands twenty times a day, instead of the five we were accustomed to. Saying that, a friend of mine went to a Private Club in London at the beginning of this pandemic, and some of the posh ladies in the bathroom did not wash their hands after doing a pee pee, which you would do even if there wasn’t a bird flu virus swirling through the British capital and beyond. So, sometimes I question our common sense.

But there you have it: some of us obviously believe that the virus is beneath us, that we are untouchable. Take the old people at our local Farmer’s Market. Germans don’t know how to queue at the best of times - we are now at the worst of times. They stand there in their little groups of fours and fives, maybe with a little more distant between them, maybe not. Perhaps the greater distance is why their comments about “look at her with her mask, it is not like this is the Pest; I have lived my life, doesn’t concern me; I have been standing here with the cucumber I picked up from the stack (with the sign that says “Do Not Touch” next to it) for two minutes, it is all I am buying from you, only to put it down back on the stand and walk away angrily for not being served; I am covered in Jesus’s blood, the virus cannot touch me” are so audible.

Our whingeing is what the Germans call “complaining of the highest order”, which I like to call “First World Problems”, like cancelling the cleaner, having to go to the grocery store twice a week instead of five times a week, cooking for your college student kids who have decided to listen to you and spend this time of uncertainty at home, and having to exercise at home or outside instead of a stinky gym.

I tend to complain a lot. But then I always try and find the good in the bad. The Persian saying of “this too shall pass” is too passive as my mantra. This is a good time to evaluate what you want in life, what you don’t and what you can do without. Those last two are not the same things.

It helps to be authentic, it helps trying new things- no, I will not attempt to sew a mask for example, but I did join an online Literary Festival last week, set up by CJ Cooke. It was during one of the sessions with Kirsty Eyre, Abigail Mann, Asia MacKay and Helen Lederer that it became so clear. The biggest tool we have to overcome this time of gloom is humour. It is the only way out of any tragedy. Humour. And reflection.

Make a list of things you have learnt from the time inside your home and away from all the hustle and bustle.

Here is mine:

-        Don’t eat bats

-        Think about why people eat bats; are we that different?

-        Washing hands and staying home when you are sick is not as OCD as I assumed

-        I am such a procrastinator

-        Writing is good for the soul

-        My goals are often unattainable; be more realistic

-        Less is more

-        I clean better than my cleaner

-        I cannot iron

-        I cannot sew

-        Facial masks also hide facial hair. Win win. (Also- Slipknot knew the power of masks all along.)

-        I need to moisturize more

-        I spend far too much time on social media

-        Social Media drains your soul

-        You can never have enough books

-        Listen to music

-        Be kind to yourself

PS I may just let you know all the re-scheduled concert dates. But before I do, I will have to dry my tears about not seeing Pearl Jam this year. That may take a while. Take care of yourself and yours!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

2020 is upon us and we started it with Jools Holland’s Hootananny. What set the tone for us? The Stereophonics

Surely Kelly Jones is one of the most underrated singers in the music business. He has been accused of being conceited and slagging off other musicians, but be it as it may, he is a musical genius. The Stereophonics are touring Germany with their 11th album “Kind” from 31 January to 12 February and I am almost certain that Kelly never dreamed he would be as successful as he is now when he formed the band Tragic Love, Company back in 1992, which later changed their name to Stereophonics.

“Dakota”, “Maybe Tomorrow” or “Just Looking” were stupidly popular, but for good reason, too. Their BRIT award back in the late 90’s were testament to their love of indie rock with passion and directness. This directness and no-frills attitude is what has remained and makes them one of the best rock bands Britain has ever given us.

Their shows in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, Munich and Hamburg are a must on your 2020 calendar.

FAVE TWO NEW RELEASES

Can we just start with SLIPKNOT please? Rock is not dead and they have just proved it.

I used to be scared of SLIPKNOT. Proper scared. I loved their music, but as an MTV-generation kid, their videos freaked me out; I could never add the two together and never got the masks. Then my 13-year-old kid took me to my first ever gig, confessing I never partook in the Meet & Greet he had the pleasure of attending. The rest is history, as they say…

Their first two albums “Slipknot” and “Iowa” were aggressive and full of attitude, but their third album “Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)” was a genuine masterpiece. You can argue the next two albums all you like, e.g. a little more mainstream followed by a homage to Paul Gray, but this, their sixth album “We Are Not Your Kind” is by far the best music SLIPKNOT have released since “Vol.3”.

I have read reviews of this album, that it isn’t hard core enough, but surely musicians have to grow rather than play the same old over and over again. With Jay Weinberg on drums, songs like “Birth of the Cruel” are a testament to a musical evolution by the band and for those who really need to vent “Red Flag” (Rockculture’s favourite) and “Solway Firth” are surely enough to keep the vocal chords (un)happy. Corey Taylor’s voice has matured and the production of the album is altogether a lot warmer than many would expect.

SLIPKNOT have worked with a lot of samples this time around, but so clever and so in tune with a solid metal album, that the only thing we can really criticize about their latest release, is that they are taking so bloody long to play it live. Though, I guess, it gives us enough time to learn the lyrics by heart. Every single word.

Live Nation are in charge of their German tour, with Special Guest BEHEMOTH, kicking off on

29.01.20 in Frankfurt, Festhalle then the following dates along with more dates throughout Europe

ANOTHER ALBUM RELEASE AND UPCOMING TOUR

Another sixth album release, i.e. counting their twin release of “Juggernaut Alpha & Omega” as two separate releases, came about for the Djent masters of PERIPHERY.

The unbelievably gifted musicians from Washington have only just gone ahead and perfected their art with this album “Periphery IV: Hail Stan”. Not phased by their Grammy nomination, Spencer Sotelo (vocals), Misha Mansoor, Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb (guitars) and Matt Halpern (drums) have furthered anything you have ever wanted to label Prog Rock.

Holcomb says “our new material is not what is expected of us. It would be great to be known for our unpredictability.”

We can predict their shows in November to be something which will leave you flabbergasted. Their German dates are

01.11.19 Köln Essigfabrik

02.11.19 Hamburg Greenspan

04.11.19 München Backstage Werk

So many gigs and so little time

Hoping that Rock Werchter will be better organised than Rock im Park was, we feel the need to head to smaller venues- to enjoy the actual gig and in order to keep sane. The big crowds make it so hard to enjoy the music, which is why we enjoyed Cane Hill in Trier that much. Why they only supported is beyond us, but so are a lot of things.

Before heading to Belgium we are making our way to the Batschkapp to see Stone Temple Pilots on 26 June. Be there, unless of course you go and see them the night before in Cologne at the Live Music Hall. Their European tour continues, so if you can, you should check them out.

Werchter next for Rockculture and friends and we will actually be leaving Werchter early, mainly because Lamb of God are back in Frankfurt. They play Batschkapp on 01 July. Check out their other dates on lamb-of-god.com though

Some may call them conceited, some may call them genius, we just call them Royal Blood. First time heard about them was through MUSE and supporting Foo Fighters at Fenway Park. They started out as a unique kind of band, their attitude may or may not have helped them along the way. There comes a time in every band’s life though, when you have to be humble. I will observe their attitude and their live set on 23 July in Wiesbaden at the Schlachthof or on 24 July in Hamburg at the Grosse Freiheit 36….

A band who have always had fun with what they do are The Damend. We are super excited to see some headline shows from them again. They play

Schlachthof, Bremen on 30.07.2019 and

Stollwerck, Köln on 01.08.2019

That is us done for July. Catch more from us next week. Over and out.

FESTIVALS anyone?

Is it just me, or are there more festivals than ever before? At Rockculture we tend to stick to the ones we know. I think for the most part, the festivals are a nightmare for the artists. They only have super limited time to play and the technical side of things can be challenging. For the fans it is equally challenging because there’s a whole cult of festival goers who go just to enjoy the festival rather than the musical acts. The organisers, for the most part, make sure there’s enough to go around for both though.

Still. We are lined up to go to these festivals in 2019- Rock im Park and Rock Werchter.

Rock im Park 2019

Highlights on Friday must be Architects and Bring Me. The latter got so much hate from their old fanbase for their last album “amo”, which is a technical masterpiece and has raised their ballgame. They have been able to truly grow as artists and even the hardest metalhead’s guilty pleasure must be to rave to some of BMTH’s dance tunes. Both bands have incredible live sets and I am in awe of the Architects to return to the stage where Tom Searle performed his last concert.

Saturday….Saturday….Saturday. Another band who got a lot of hate for going in a more melodic direction is Slipknot. Cannot wait for the intellectual of all metalheads, Corey Taylor, to prove to the crowd in Nürnberg how Slipknot are alive and kicking, knee- and spine surgery and all.

Sunday is going to be exhausting for us at Rockculture and we hope we make it all the way to Tool cos having to see some of our favourite bands in history, Smashing Pumpkins, Beartooth, While She Sleeps and Alice in Chains (!!!!!) will surely make our hearts race and our throats sore. Cage the Elephant could prove to calm things down, but then again, too many good tunes to stay still.

***

We literally only have a few weeks to recover from Rock im Park before we head off to Belgium for Rock Werchter. We were not going to go back to Belgium for any festival for personal reasons, but the line-up has swayed us.

Thursday kicks off with a band who should be seen live before you judge their music, Deaf Havana. Their last album “Rituals”was too poppy for some (there is a theme here, with bands venturing into more melodic tunes and getting abuse), but it has opened them up to so many new fans. Live they are truly amazing, so don’t miss them. They are still pretty rock’n’roll, you know. P!NK is one of those acts, too. Yes, I am actually mentioning P!NK and Deaf Havana in one paragraph. Whilst Deaf Havana convince with their musical talents on stage, P!NK does so as an artist on a whole. Her live shows are phenomenal and her personality will grip you wholeheartedly.

Friday I am in Love- guess who we are here for. Yes, some of our favourites are here, Bring Me, SWMRS, Weezer and Snarky Puppy. But ultimately Friday I am in Love because….The Cure. Come on. This is the highlight of anyone, but especially us at Rockculture, and I don’t care if that is showing my age.

Saturday and Sunday is bound to be interesting, too, but who knows if we are still up for the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Parkway Drive and Greta van Fleet. Send us loads of pics, in case we miss Saturday and Sunday due to exhaustion from the epic Friday at Werchter.

TRIXIE

It was an honour to welcome Trixie Whitley to Frankfurt. Her latest album “Lacuna” was produced by Little Shalimar of The Jewels, making her electric rhythms and her fascinating voice create more than ripples in your tummy.

Whether it is motherhood or just a natural progression of her Rhythm’n’Blues to an edgy Indy Rock genre, the Belgian who now resides in Brooklyn, is the perfect example of what a true musician is, or rather, should be. Her musical background- an artist who actually plays drums, guitar and piano, dances, dj’s- brings back a true belief in what we love in music: honesty and creativity.

Although not typically our type of genre, we urge you to indulge into the creative world of Trixie Whitley.

SPRINGing into Action

After a long hibernation it is time to hit the clubs, concert halls and festivals again.

We are going to start slow, but strong with Trixie Whitley honouring her commitment to do the shows she had to cancel last year. The Belgian Boss Lady is taking her new album “Lacuna” on road with her and true to her form and cosmopolitan genius, she will mesmerize you with her very unique mixture of Soul, R’n’B and Indie Rock. Little Shalimar’s epic sound on her new album will hopefully be translated into something magical in her live shows.

German Dates are as follows:

21.05.2019 Frankfurt - Brotfabrik

22.05.2019 München - Orangehouse

- and then back again in the autumn-

07.11.2019 Köln - Studio 672

08.11.2019 Berlin - Musik und Frieden

Always quite fond of geeky guitarists and clever musicians here at Rockculture, we will of course be seeing Trivium on their very short tour of Germany in June. We can’t wait to hear their eighth album “The Sin and the Sentence” live, but we have to be honest…we are actually a little more excited about Cane Hill supporting them on both of their shows.

Cane Hill’s last German tour was amazing- lesser than Witt having his Morrissey T-Shirt stolen in Cologne. Bands like Cane Hill and While She Sleeps, who will only support their Hamburg show along with Power Trip, leave us in awe, never getting tired of delivering metal at its best.

Go see them

18.06.2019 Hamburg – Markthalle (with Cane Hill, WSS & Power Trip)

19.06.2019 Berlin – Kesselhaus (with Cane Hill)

One of our absolute favourite bands is coming back to Germany for an exclusive concert, we are assuming they loved the German fans that much. And to be fair, they’ve been good to SWMRS, but SWMRS have been good to their fans.

SWMRS’ new album “Berkeley’s on Fire” is part of our daily playlist, the influence of Tom Morello is more prominent than that of The Ramones, but whoever thought punk rock is just a matter of three chords better listen to SWMRS. Pure punk rock class!

If you are quick enough, you may be lucky enough to grab your ticket for

25.06.2019 Düsseldorf – Zakk

SWMRS (Photo credit Alice Baxley)

Another favourite act here at Rockculture- actually, one of the really, really deep routed LOVES here at Rockculture, are coming to Germany for a one-off gig, as well.

Alice_In_Chains_Promo_Shot_Xraytouring.jpg

Alice in Chains always stood out in the grunge scene in the late 1980’s and all through the 1990’s, also because they never really fit into any one compartment. Layne Staley’s voice mesmerized millions. His untimely death almost killed the genius of what Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney had created with it. In finding William DuVall, the band have come back around. Following their epic success of their numerous Grammy nominations, platinum and gold records of the 1990’s, their album “Black Gives Way to Blue” featuring William DuVall as their new singer put them back on the map. Alice in Chains’ latest album “Rainier Fog” has truly manifested them as one of the finest rock bands ever.

See them live, with Special Guests Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in

04.06.2019 Hamburg – Stadtpark Open Air

Gee, and if you fancy a little lighter fare, here’s one more American band we really love, coming to Germany for an exclusive concert. I am sensing a trend here.

With their fifth album “Social Cues” Cage the Elephant are touring the European festival circuit and are playing

11.06.2019 Berlin – Musik & Frieden

Cage The Elephant

Most of the bands mentioned above will also be at a festival near you during the summer, so be sure to look out for them!

THOUGHTS AND STUFF

It has been a while. Personal reasons. But also just really depleted of news. Then all came at once.

Bury Tomorrow- “Black Flame”!!!!! How did that happen? I told you ages ago that they are the best new metal band to look out for, but since hooking up with Sony they really have taken it up a step. Not a lie. Cannot wait to see them this month or in December, depending on when I can get there, how often I can get there, you get the picture.

Bury Tomorrow are of course touring with Cane Hill, who I thought were okay until they released their new album “Too Far Gone”……so epic. And them in combination with Bury Tomorrow at a show may make a headbanger or two happier than Larry.

And to top it all off, have you listened to “Royal Beggars” off the new Architects album “Holy Hell”? Where are they coming up with the lyrics and the tunes?

It cracks me up to read that Jordan Fish from BMTH says that there isn’t enough rock music out there to stream. In his recent interview with Mark Sutherland from Music Week, he was talking about how Bring Me the Horizon are one of the few bands who make an impact on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. Sure they have four million plus monthly listeners on Spotify and “Mantra” has become indeed a MANTRA on streaming services worldwide (it has sold over 50.000 copies so far), but to say that others are “generally bad” is really a bit rich, when Ricky Martin could always come back and have a say about how the “Livin’ la Vida Loca” was used in certain rock songs. Jordan Fish is a superior songwriter in his own right, no doubt, but there are rock bands out there who just don’t get the chance to be heard.

Saying that I am deeply grateful for Bring Me the Horizon to have introduced me to YONAKA who have been going for a while, but without their epic support slot for BMTH, I would have not listened to. Now that, my friends would have been a grave loss. They are a lot more rock than other bands with a female singer and they have an uncanny feeling of Siouxie of Siouxie and the Banshees, not a compliment given lightly.

Watch and listen, download, buy, stream. They are bubbciliciously yummy

youtube.com/channel/UCzBddYqg5UYiz3U6EhwDCEA

No, there is music out there and I love it when bands are able to adapt to new styles and take inspiration from other genres and artists (see BMTH), but also While She Sleeps. Have you heard “Anti-Social”? They are such an epic band and if this twist doesn’t catapult them to where they should be, I would be more than disappointed.

THE DAMNED

When you say “Punk” you associate the term with lots of different bands, but pathfinders for this movement were and are The Damned.

They released their first album “Damned Damned Damned” and their first single “New Rose” back in 1976 and toured the same circuit as Siouxie and the Banshees, The Stranglers, Iggy and the Stooges and The Liverpool Explosion. Music was raw but it was that movement that made it real, no Simon Cowell in sight.

The Damned also knew how to diversify before musicians had to – Captain Sensible and his chart loving release of “Wot” was epic and my little Goth heart skipped a beat when they released “Eloise” (even mentioning that song, I will hum that melody all day). I also remember reading that Vanian and his wife had coffins for beds and I am dying to find out (pun intended) if Smash Hits made that one up….

Their new album "Evil Spirits" is testament to diversion, but it is fun and brilliant!

If you need proof watch their latest release “Look Left” from their new album here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za7S1q4qU2Q

I am not sure that Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible ever stopped touring in the 40+ years, but the two of them along with their bassist John Priestley, keyboarder Monty Oxymoron and drummer Pinch Pinching are touring Germany in May. You would be a complete idiot to miss these legends.

Quiet start to 2018, but oooooohhh, cannot wait for the SUMMER

Apologies for the slow and quiet start here at ROCKCULTURE. Our photographer has jumped ship, so some of the gigs we were covering like alt-j were a no go. Sorry people.

The German leg of the Architects tour, supported by the always brilliant While She Sleeps, was fabulous, but we wouldn't expect anything less. Inspiring that the crowds are getting bigger, yet the artists remain humble.

What have we got in store for you in the next few months? In no particular order, check out the tours of some of these favourites at rockculture:

The Wombats

Future Islands

Neck Deep

Marmozets

SWMRS

Arcane Roots

Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes

Franz Ferdinand

and really old skool The Damned

Christmas Presents and an Exciting 2018

What tours are you excited for in 2018????

The festival line ups in Europe are insane for 2018, agreed? Foos, Pearl Jam, MUSE, QOTSA to name but a few. ROCKCULTURE are super stoked about the ARCHITECTS and WHILE SHE SLEEPS tour(s), naturally, but here are two acts we are so excited about that we almost peed our pants (but only almost). Can you name the bands in the photos? More on them in our next news blog.

Autumn News

You know what we seriously considered??? Flying to Brazil to the Lollapalooza Festival to see Pearl Jam. But because we already spent all our cash on watching the Foo Fighters open the most epic new East Coast venue in DC (see “GIGS”), we doubt our bank manager will justify that it would be worth the flight fare. Even though it is Pearl Jam we are talking about- speaking of:

Sonos and Pearl Jam have teamed together to host extended screenings of the documentary “Let’s Play Two” in selected cities this week. If you’re a fan, you should try and go- it will be the first time you have the opportunity to view 45 minutes of not seen in theatres footage before the official home video release later in November.

We are a bit bummed that we missed Paramore’s ex-drummer’s return to the band onstage at London’s Royal Albert Hall last June. Zac Faro left in 2010 and surprised the audience with his drum return, only to come back on stage for the encore with his solo project HALFNOISE.

Zac’s debut “Scooby’s in the Back” from his EP “The Velvet Face” reminds me of The La’s, Inspiral Carpets, but with a bit of sunshine, rainbow and nuts taken from The Beach Boys maybe. Completely worth listening to.

Another band which is bit retro, but so much more refreshing compared to a lot of their peers, are The Strypes. Check these Irishmen out on their upcoming tour of Germany in January.

Tours, tours, tours and MILESTONES

So we are pretty lucky in Germany being able to go to some awesome shows in the next few weeks.....

but those of you in Britain may have lucked out more because

THE GOSPEL YOUTH and MILESTONES are doing a joint headline tour in September

The Gospel Youth have been labeled "Your new favourite band" by Rock Sound and are seriously one of the UK's hottest new Pop rock bands. So with their choice of co-headliners Milestones, this tour will be the most fun you will have had all year.

Sept. 16 - Manchester, England - Sound Control
Sept. 17 - Nottingham, England - Bodega
Sept. 18 - Southampton, England - Joiners
Sept. 19 - London, England - Camden Assembly
Sept. 20 - Bristol, England - Exchange
Sept. 21 - Birmingham, England - Flapper
Sept. 22 - New Castle, England - Jumpin' Jacks
Sept. 23 - Glasgow, Scotland - Audio
Sept. 24 - Leeds, England - Key Club

Tickets onsale Friday 4th August 10am

Both acts have had phenomenal support from two of the biggest producers around. The Gospel Youth's debut album Always Lose is out now via Rise/Velocity Records and was produced by Romesh Dodangoda (Kids In Glass Houses, Bring Me The Horizon, Twin Atlantic). Live they are currently on the Vans Warped tour, but have shared stages with the likes of We Are The Ocean, Mallory Knox, Deaf Havana, Hands Like Houses and many more. In 2016 the band launched a campaign that saw them release 12 crowdfunded singles in 12 months, putting their future in the hands of their fans and opening up the opportunity to write month on month about live experiences as they happen.

The Manchester UK four-piece Milestones have been signed to Fearless Records after proving how talented and determined they are, ready to raise the bar even higher by setting yet another milestone. The group debut EP release Equal Measures, produced by Phil Gornell (Bring Me The Horizon, All Time Low, Set Your Goals), unleashed five tracks that all brilliantly showcase singer Clarke’s passionate, emotionally-drenched vocals and the band’s knack for crafting infectiously catchy melodies while wrapping them all around themes of self-recognition, acceptance, learning to love yourself and realising when it’s time to move forward.

Psychocandy, con.

What really, really, really excites us this month is the return of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Their tour to promote their new album "Damage & Joy" will hopefully make other journalists stop comparing them to the Gallagher brothers (really, how, cos they are related and had a tiff?).

Countless bands copied the back to the audience ritual, no one can do it like Jim & William.
